A tropical wave moving off the coast of Africa has been marked as Invest 96L by the NHC. Below is a look at the tropical wave, with its center located just off the African coastline.
Over the next five days 96L will move west at a good pace. As of right now, the NHC only gives it a 20% chance of development.
I think the NHC giving 96L only a 20% chance of development is too low. While I understand that the invest just moved off the coast, it'll be moving into pretty good conditions over the next few days, with warm waters in the 80s and decreasing shear. The few hurricane models that have put out predictions for this system all develop it into a tropical storm. Due to this ingredients, I expect the chance of development to increase.
The tropics will continue to get more active as we head into the "meat" of the hurricane season. Be sure to check out my twitter and follow!
EDIT : Just as I was publishing this post the NHC upped their probabilities for development. Since I think the updated probabilities are still kind of low, and I didn't want this post to go to waste, I'm posting it anyway. You can find updated images on the Tropics page.
